| Canadian Commercials |
[13 Jan 2011|12:00pm] |
Someone on my Twitter feed posted a link to a You Tube video of a Canadian beer commercial, and it reminded me of this series of Labatt's ads from (I think) either the 80s or 90s that played around with the word "la." For example, you have a guy who is at "la party" eating "la cocktail wieners" with "la rottweiler" who spots "la goddess" and offers her Labatt's beer.
The problem is, I cannot find any clips of those commercials anywhere. It's like I'm imagining them. Does anyone remember them? Even better, does anyone know where I might be able to find them online?

And I see we've been hit twice in as many days. I've reported this latest instance to the LJ staff, but we need to get something set up to weed out the "bad apples". That way, we can get back to discussing Republic of Doyle, InSecurity, Flashpoint and other past and present homegrown favourites.

| Facing Reality |
[25 Nov 2010|11:54am] |
As is likely a trend in all countries that produce some of their own programs, reality television has grown into a huge part of what is broadcast here in Canada.
But as it's also an easy target for criticisms from the snobby "cultured" types who want to maintain some dignity in their entertainment tastes, many of us won't admit to our true guilty pleasures that we indulge in from this genre. How many people have you heard use the excuse that they only subscribe to Slice because it's part of a cable package that they got because they're hobby chefs who like the Food Network or they're thinking of renovating and want to get ideas from HGTV?
So I'm going to kick-start this group therapy session by stepping forward to make the first confession. About three or four years ago, I started dabbling in Canadian reality programming. It started with basic half-hour programs that taught me responsible life lessons, like the consequences of spending money you don't have from Gail Vaz-Oxlade on Til Debt Do Us Part. Then it went on to hour long shows from which I looked for inspiration to get healthy - like X-Weighted, where trainer Paul Plakas drives people to work out their bodies through primitive rage that sparks every time he says "Unreal, bebe!", and Fred Connors (or as I like to call him, Gay Chuck Norris) rips people apart to find their deepest insecurities then builds them back up through self esteem with a finishing coat of nice clothes and a haircut.
Then the ante was upped on how much of my time this secret habit would consume. Gail Vaz-Oxlade started another show this fall, an hour long tough-love show of financial rehabilitation for entitled young women called Princess. And then...*sniff* it got even worse! Having already grown fond of a British reality show in which strangers host dinner parties for each other in attempt to win a prize, this past month the W Network started airing its Canadian counterpart. Come Dine With Me Canada has started taking up two and a half straight hours of my life every Monday! I feel so ashamed, but even though watching residents of the GTA make complete fools out of themselves in kitchens and conversations alike is at times a painful endeavour, like a train wreck I cannot look away!
So please, let's support each other - let's all talk about how shared experiences in the guilty pleasure that is home grown Reality TV. We can help each other recover and get back to leading healthy, productive lives.

Thank you bigbadblackhole for letting me know about the spam post regarding marijuana testing. While this community will not tolerate bots such as the one that posted that particular entry, we will tolerate posts written by those under the influence of marijuana who can't stop giggling at old SCTV episodes, particularly sketches involving Bob & Doug McKenzie.
And to make this more than just a moderator-warning post, I will add this: the Men With Brooms TV show is filmed where I curl. No lies, I know those sheets when I see them!

| Lost Girl |
[16 Sep 2010|10:13pm] |
Is anyone else watching "Lost Girl" on Showcase? I watched the first episode last Sunday, and it looks like a good show. But since it's brand-new, and currently only in Canada, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of fandom or discussion about it.

Finally catching a full episode tonight, having been dumb enough to miss the kick-off last week.
So...where's the line-up for the show's fandom?

I've been bitten by the Degrassi High (not Junior High) bug...and can only find season 1 and 2. Does anyone know where I can find a torrent for season 3 and up? =D
Thanks in advance.
